5. Conclusions

Our results have led us to the realization that shifting teachers' understanding of the content and their beliefs about teaching and learning, although necessary, is not sufficient for realizing dramatic gains in mathematics teachers' instructional practices. This realization has led to our developing video case studies and precalculus level instructional tools to support teachers in transitioning to inquiry focused and conceptually based instruction. The video case studies are designed to provide teachers new knowledge and more clear images of instructional practices that promote inquiry based, student centered, and conceptually focused lessons. In this session we will describe our findings and focus on how our findings informed the development of these video case studies.
