Ohio's Evaluation & Assessment Center for Mathematics and Science Education (E & A Center) is the external evaluator for two MSP projects: The Mathematics Science Partnership in New York City (MSPinNYC) at Hunter College, City University of New York, and the University of Pennsylvania's Science Teacher Institutes (PennSTI). This paper describes some of the challenges as well as the opportunities in evaluating large-scale, multi-year science and mathematics education projects. Data from both projects will provide insights to the progress and success of the projects as well as suggestions for future similar evaluations and lessons learned about the MSP initiative.
